Surrounded by over 10,000 hectares of Mediterranean woodland, it is easily accessed, enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year and offers superb views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The region of Alicante has got a new star to added to their collection of great courses. In an exclusive private community, away from the hustle & bustle of the coastline, yet still within a few minutes of Campoamor beach, lies the new 18 hole Championship course of Las Colinas de Campoamor. Situated in 10,000 hectares of Mediterranean woodland, this resort lies in a secluded valley in the southern part of Alicante between the town of San Miguel de Salinas and the coast, with sea views of the Mediterranean and Mar Menor. You enter through a dramatic gorge, preserving the tranquillity and natural beauty of the valley revealed within. With low-density housing, it is an eco friendly development surrounded by hills as it blends naturally into the landscape - indeed a world apart. The par-71 course is designed by Cabell B. Robinson who is well renowned in the golf industry for designs such as La Reserva in Sotogrande, Praia d’El Rey in Portugal and La Finca de Cortesin on the Costa del Sol, which was the venue for the Volvo Matchplay event in 2009. When he sat down to plan the 6,377 meter course layout, a major factor in this mind was blending the course with the indigenous Mediterranean surrounding to “make it look like an integrated part of the existing landscape”. The end result is golf course that runs along the valley with towering hills to act as a place of isolation and intimacy. This is something which is not possible at a lot of Spanish courses. Mr. Robinson explained he wanted to “use the rich Mediterranean vegatation surrounding the course, [to give] the development a beauty intrinsic to the spot that we have tried to preserve. Thus, the plants that were added to adorn the course are indigenous, because the goal of the design was to make it look like and integrated part of the existing landscape.” This is in stark contrast with the arid plains that are common place in Alicante interior landscape. The championship course is set amdist orange and lemon groves, giving a beautifully traditional sense to playing golf here. So what about the course? The more elite golfer can take on a challenge of the 6337 meters from the back tees, but with five different tee platforms on each hole, golfers of all skill levels will enjoy their game here. The large greens are fast, undulating and sometimes intimidating, but unlike many new courses, Las Colinas can boast true putting surfaces, that are kept to impeccable standards. Other facilities on offer at Las Colinas de Campoamor include a clubhouse with bar & restaurant, terraces, golf shop, and well appointed locker rooms, and other sports facilities such as tennis & paddle courts, and a gymnasium, all of which will be open in time for the opening in early summer 2010. The large driving range with natural grass tee areas provides fantastic practise facilities and here you will also be able to sharpen up your game by using the large putting green, practise bunkers, and separate chipping green. Accommodation with also be available on site for golfers. Las Colinas de Campoamor is managed by Troon Golf, the world’s leader in upscale golf course management. With courses in 26 countries, Troon Golf are market leaders in providing a golfer with an exceptional service and experience at each of their venues. This is done through a consistant and personal service where every detail must be perfect so expectations will constantly be exceeded. Bruce Glasco, Senior Vice President & Managing Director EMEA Troon Golf said, “From the moment you drive through a canyon style entrance the impact of the resort catches you straight away. I honestly believe Las Colinas will raise the bar for the standard of golf on the east coast of Spain”. For those of you who still need convincing, then it would be a good time to remind you about the warm spanish climate of over 300 days of sunshine a year and the superb views on offer here of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor lagoon. With the much anticipated 2010 launch, golfers are sure to flock to Las Colinas de Campoamor to experience this gem for themselves. The many hard years of work are over and the staff at Las Colinas de Campoamor are ready to welcome you with open arms. |
