Francisco Camps the president of the Generalitat Valenciana was the honoured guest amongst many well known political personalities to officially open the new "Marina Salinas."

The Mayor of Torrevieja in his speech of welcome thanked the president for all of his support and help during the project and said it was the most important day of his political life and he had been waiting for this moment for 20 years. The President, Francisco Camps, talked of the importance of tourism to the economy of the province and in the obvious part the new marina had to play in that. He was also full of praise for the way that the mayor of Torrevieja and his team had managed the town’s affairs creating wealth and employment in the town. It was an example to all in the province as to how to create a flourishing economy and develop quality tourism he went on to say.

The marina itself has been built by the construction firm of Aldesa. Consisting of the protective walls, new berths, a commercial centre, extra car parking, new water sports and sailing facilities and the relocation of the fishing harbour and market, the project will cost a total almost €31 million and will provide 713 berths of various lengths ranging from 8 to 35 metres. This will increase the capacity of the harbour by 50 percent and make Torrevieja’s sailing and water sports centre the third most important in the Community of Valencia. The importance of the fishing and salt industries continues to be recognised with space being created for 20 vessels and a handling capacity of 2,500 tonnes of fish a year. The facilities will also be capable dealing with around 500 thousand tonnes of salt a year.

It was very much a red letter day for the mayor of Torrevieja’s administration because the town had been chosen by President Francisco Camps as the venue to parade the chosen candidates to stand in the General election to the Congress as head of the PP lists for the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón within the Valencian Community. Federico Trillo represents Alicante; Esteban González Pons Valencia and Juan Costa Castellón. Juan Costa was unable to be present because of illness but the remaining two together with other leading figures from the PP party enjoyed a get together and political rally at the Bahia Costa in La Mata where once again the mayor of Torrevieja was complimented in very warm tones on the way he had managed the development and economy of Torrevieja.
